What Personal Data do we collect and why?

Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics. When you visit this site, Google Analytics uses cookies to collect browsing information about how users use this site. Google Analytics collects semi-anonymized information such as browser type, device type, country of origin, search terms, referral links, and ad links. When you browse the internet while logged into your Google account, the information collected about you by Google is classified as personal information. Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string for use in spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. After approval of your comment, your Gravatar profile picture, if you have one, is visible to the public with your comment. Read Gravatar’s privacy policy.

Who we share your data with

Your data is shared with Google Analytics through automated data sharing (as outlined above in Analytics). Otherwise, we do not share your data with anyone, with the possible exception of online service providers for the purposes of technical support. In that unlikely event, every effort will be made to preserve user privacy. Additionally, those service providers are covered by their own robust privacy policies (see below).

How long your data is retained

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. Google Analytics data is retained indefinitely. If you send me an email, your email is retained indefinitely. If you subscribe to my newsletter, your subscriber data is retained indefinitely, even if you unsubscribe.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we permanently delete any personal data we hold about you, including your newsletter subscriber data. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for legal or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service called Akismet. Visitor browsing patterns are collected by Google Analytics.
